Montréal glitters this week as artistic light projections play across Mount Royal’s peak, outdoor activities keep everyone warm, markets beckon with local creations, The Nutcracker ballet delights, and live music has us singing along.

Winter in the city

Downtown’s Le Grand Marché de Noël de Montréal transforms Sainte-Catherine Street into a sparkling wonderland outside Place des Arts – find gifts and goodies, kids activities, live music and Canada’s tallest Christmas tree. Right around the corner, make art move with the push of a lever in the 13 giant zoetropes of this year’s Luminothérapie. The Old Port’s Natrel Skating Rink lights up with fireworks on Dec. 17. Hear music, eat, drink and even see Santa during Noël dans le Parc at Place Émilie-Gamelin, Parc des Compagnons and Parc Lahaie. Village Mammouth turns the Olympic Stadium Esplanade into a winter fun zone with ice skating, tube sliding, food trucks and a market. See our round-up of winter activities for all ages for more things to do, including tropical adventures at the Biodôme and the Botanical Garden. And find seasonal solace at some of the city’s most stunning churches and other sacred sites.
